Sure, inspo posts might tell you not to sweat the small stuff. But what happens when sweat is your not-so-small problem? That can be the case for people affected by hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.

At My Skin Laser Clinics we offer a safe and effective treatment for excessive sweating that provides long-term results.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating beyond the body’s natural cooling process. Common areas that may be affected include the hands, feet and under the arms. The condition causes prolonged sweating that results in a constant damp feeling and visible sweat patches.

Hyperhidrosis often begins during adolescence, although some people can have the condition from birth. In other cases, hyperhidrosis is a side effect of another medical condition such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism.

If you have hyperhidrosis you’ll likely experience some of these symptoms:

  • Clammy or wet palms of the hand
  • Clammy or wet soles of the feet
  • Frequent sweating (and not just when exercising or in hot weather)
  • Noticeable sweating that soaks through clothing

While excessive sweating can be embarrassing, it can also lead to more serious concerns. Excess sweat can lead to irritating bacterial or viral infections, itchy or red skin, or nail infections. It can also lead to confidence issues and loss of self-esteem.

Many people with hyperhidrosis try to simply manage the condition by avoiding certain activities, shaking hands or other physical contact, using a strong antiperspirant or simply changing your clothes multiple times a day. They may also eschew certain clothing or fabrics, like silk or light colours, as these can show up sweat more clearly.

Hyperhidrosis treatment

While some treatments can require daily medication or even surgery, at MySkin Laser clinics we offer a far less invasive treatment that can suppress the symptoms of hyperhidrosis for up to nine months.

Amazingly, the same treatment used to plump the skin and reduce the signs of aging can also be used to effectively combat excessive sweating. Anti-wrinkle injections have been found to stop localised sweating by blocking the neural signals that stimulate activity in the sweat glands. The treatment essentially ‘turns off’ your sweat at the treated area, enabling you to experience dry hands, feet and armpits without using strong chemicals or having to undergo surgery.

Hyperhidrosis  treatment should only be carried out by a qualified practitioner. At MySkin Laser Clinics, a registered nurse will first conduct an in-depth consultation to assess you particular concerns and suitability for treatment, before administering the injections.

What to know about hyperhidrosis treatment

Before your treatment, it’s important to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours as it can thin the blood and make the treatment less effective. The procedure itself is relatively quick, taking only around 10 minutes to administer.

Following your treatment, you’ll need to avoid lying down for at least 12 hours. Wear loose clothing and don’t rub or cause friction around the injected area. And don’t use any makeup or other substances on the skin. In fact, this is probably an ideal time to relax and catch up on your favourite shows.

You may experience some bruising around the treated area in the days following, which is completely normal. Some clients also experience minor bumps or redness at the injection points, which will disappear within a few days.

Once your skin has settled down, you’ll notice a visible reduction in sweating. While anti-wrinkle injections aren’t a permanent treatment for excessive sweating, it is a safe, quick and effective method for managing symptoms when other remedies haven’t worked. Results appear within four to ten days and last between six to nine months.

For a procedure that takes such a small amount of time, the benefits can be dramatic. In no time you’ll feel free to throw on your favourite silk top and head out with confidence.
